The Great Spirit Circle Trail launches a new schedule of day tours for Fully-Independent Travellers and visitors to the region

Birch Island, June 30, 2005 – The Great Spirit Circle Trail (GSCT) is pleased to announce an exciting program of daily activities geared to visitors to the Manitoulin and Sagamok region. Each weekday commencing July 4th through September 2nd, a selection of engaging and interactive culturally themed activities have been scheduled in First Nations on Manitoulin and in the Sagamok Anishnawbek community.

Monday
Mother Earth Walk (am)
Participate in a guided nature walk to learn about the identification of various local plant species and their uses in traditional cooking as well as medicinal properties which they may contain.

Graphic Design Through Native Eyes (pm)
Tour an Aboriginal-owned graphic printing operation. Learn about local woodland design and motifs. Create your own silkscreen keepsake, such as a t-shirt, handbag or wall hanging.

Tuesday
Moccasins & Beadwork Craft Demonstration (am)
Learn about the traditional moccasin style of our region's people and watch how the deerhide is transformed into a moccasin. Under the expert guidance of a skilled craftsperson, try your hand at a small bead and leather craft item.

Bannock Making (pm)
Learn how to mix and cook your own "bannock" (also known as "frybread"), the traditional bread of our region, over an open fire while your hosts share their knowledge of local Aboriginal history and culture. Your teachers are well-known in the region as making the "best frybread in northern Ontario!"

Wednesday
Crafts & Story Telling (pm)
Begin your visit with a tour of the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation. Learn about the local culture through stories and teachings as you craft a lasting memento of your visit to this region with local materials such as sweetgrass and stones.

Thursday
Art & Interpretive Tour (pm)
Participate in a rock painting lesson followed by a short guided walking tour. Watch as your expert guides light a fire with flint and boil water for your natural herb tea.

Traditional Native Feast (pm)
Enjoy authentic native cuisine in a relaxed setting. Savour the tastes of local fish, wild game meats, wild rice, berries, bannock, corn soup and so much more!

Friday
Hoop Dance Teachings (pm)
Learn about the significance and symbolism of the Hoop Dance from the perspective of the Aboriginal people of North America. Your teacher has been gifted with these special teachings which he has shared amongst the people of the area producing "World Champion Hoop Dancers"! These teachings include actual dance lessons.
