Language Primer

Language PrimerHere are some useful words for you to use when you visit our region.

Aambe – let’s go

Aaneesh – na – how are you?

Ahn - yes

Ahnee – a traditional greeting
in our region which loosely translated means “welcome”.  Visitors are sometimes also greeted with “boo-zhoo”.

Baa maampi miinwaa – “see you again” – as there is really no word for goodbye this is the closest approximation.

Kaa – no

Maad-bin maampi – sit here

Miidjim – “food”

Miigwetch! – our word for thank you.  Chi-miigwetch – “big” or extra special thanks.

Mnidoo Mnissing – Manitoulin Island or Island of the Great Spirit

Niich-ke-wen – “my friend”

“wiis-ni-daa” – let’s eat!
